Paquito D’Rivera and Sérgio & Odair Assad
Dances from the New World
“A kind of wizardry lies within the playing of Sérgio and Odair Assad …they produce a supple, flawlessly unified sound.”
— The Washington Post
Grammy Award-winner and former member of the legendary Cuban super group Irakere, saxophonist and clarinet player Paquito D’Rivera is one of the reigning kings of Latin jazz. Time magazine wrote, “The bopped-up, romantic, salty and sensuous jazz that he makes recognizes no real political boundary. It has roots equally in the hothouse Latin rhythms of his homeland and in the high flying horns of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Lee Konitz.”
Hailed by many as the best guitar duo in the world, Brazil’s Sérgio and Odair Assad demonstrate an extraordinary unity of playing and shared intuition that is the unique outgrowth of their profound connection as brothers. With their sublime artistry, the team is often credited with double-handedly reviving contemporary guitar music, inspiring a number of the world’s most esteemed composers to create pieces for them, including the great Astor Piazzolla.
These incomparable musicians join forces for one night in an exceptional program that mixes dance music from Latin America, Brazil and beyond.
