Luckily the group is large on talent, regularly tackling with fiery panache the more than 300 compositions left behind by the prolific jazz great, including "Better Git It in Your Soul," "Haitian Fight Song" and "Pithecanthropus Erectus." Mingus Dynasty was the first band Sue Mingus organized after her husband Charles' death in 1979. Now, 30 years later, his rich legacy ignites the bandstand as new generations of musicians - many of them not even alive during the composer's lifetime - add their individual voices and continue to interpret and build upon his compositions.</ucla:bio>

 <ucla:bio>
Steeped in the rich (yet largely uncelebrated) tradition of African-American string bands of the old South, the Carolina Chocolate Drops have been making a name for themselves with a uniquely modern vibe and approach. Since forming in 2005, the up-and-coming quartet has recorded four albums of brilliant material that Rolling Stone praises for its "dirt-floor-dance electricity." Last year their hard work started to pay off - Genuine Negro Jig took home the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. All of the musicians sing and trade instruments including banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, snare drum, jug and kazoo. The quartet's charm lies in an effortless ability to balance vintage sounds with a contemporary ethos. Band member Rhiannon Giddens sums it up best saying: "Tradition is a guide, not a jailer."

Supported by the Kevin Jeske Memorial Young Artists Fund</ucla:bio>

 <ucla:bio>
Two-time Grammy nominee Bettye LaVette is no mere singer. She is an interpreter of the highest order. Whether the song originated as country, rock, pop or blues, when she gets through with it, it is pure RandB. She gets inside a song and shapes and twists it to convey all of the emotion that can be wrought from the lyric. Her live performances are incendiary. The New York Times says, "Ms. LaVette, 64, now rivals Aretha Franklin as her generation's most vital soul singer. She uses every scrape, shout and break in her raspy voice, with a predator's sense of timing, to seize the drama of a song." Joining Bettye is New Orleans' "piano professor" Jon Cleary, with his Philthy Phew trio, which showcases a unique acoustic format as a vehicle for Cleary's varied and thrilling compositions. His music embodies the piquant flavors of New Orleans funk and classic RandB.

In the hallowed ranks of New Orleans "piano professors," Jon Cleary is on the tenure track. He balances performing on solo piano, with noted funk band The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, and his new trio Piano, Bass and Drums, alongside a career as a notorious hired gun with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and John Scofield.
</ucla:bio>

 <ucla:bio>Yet another evening of wit and witticisms from one of the world's most savage humorists. David Sedaris never disappoints, from his early days recounting tales of working as a Macy's elf on NPR's "This American Life" to his latest book, Squirrel Meets Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, a darkly sarcastic series of morality tales set in the animal kingdom. No two Sedaris appearances are alike. Every year the prolific writer reads from unpublished (and hilarious) works-in-progress and shares a book selection from another author he admires during his perpetually sold-out appearances. He'll also graciously sign autographs in the Royce Hall lobby until every insatiable fan has had their chance.

</ucla:bio>
