Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the rich, sacred vocal music of the Russian Orthodox Church has experienced an astounding renaissance, thanks in large part to Anatoly Grindenko and his celebrated Russian Patriarchate Choir. The expressive, bass-heavy sound of this 13 member, all-male a cappella choir shares little in common with the refined blends of its Western counterparts, resulting in a sound that can be described as meatier and more visceral than ethereal. “An English choir can sometimes make their sounds hit an auditorium’s back wall; only Russian voices can punch through without strain, to the world beyond” [The Times, London]. Following its critically acclaimed, sold-out engagement at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival in 2005, this remarkable ensemble makes its glorious Royce Hall debut performing works ranging from medieval chants, Russian folk songs and church music from the 16th-19th centuries.
