“Nina Ananiashvili has never failed to light up the stage. The star presence she brings…invariably fills every scene with drama.” –The New York Times
Born out of the ashes of a revolution and led by two luminaries of Russian dance, Bolshoi and ABT ballerina Nina Ananiashvili, and the Bolshoi’s former artistic director Alexei Fadeyechev, State Ballet of Georgia is on its way to posing a serious challenge to Moscow’s artistic dominance. Since her sensational debut with the Bolshoi Ballet in 1981, the Georgian-born Ananiashvili has joined the ranks of the world’s most celebrated artists, dazzling audiences with her “prodigious, space-devouring leaps and vivacity” [The New York Times].
On the heels of their first American performances at the Spoleto Festival this summer, Ananiashvili (in select performances) and the company will perform one of the most beloved ballets of all time, Giselle, and a mixed repertory program including Balanchine’s Chaconne; a new ballet by Yuri Possokhov, resident choreographer of San Francisco Ballet, set to traditional Georgian music; and a new work by the Bolshoi’s Alexei Ratmansky.
Supported by the James A. Doolittle Endowment.
